Fibromyalgia Myths

Fibromyalgia Myths

Fibromyalgia myths … today is World Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. So we’ve decided to bust some myths and misconceptions about fibro. Let’s go!

Fibromyalgia Isn’t Real

Fibromyalgia is a misunderstood condition and some people don’t even think it is real. If you experience the pain and other symptoms of fibro it is very real. Fibro causes widespread muscle pain, brain fog and fatigue but it can take years to get a diagnosis. Unfortunately there are still lots of doctors who don’t understand the condition.

Fibromyalgia Only Affects Women

There is a gender bias when it comes to being diagnosed with fibro. More women are diagnosed than men but fibro can affect any gender and 1 in 20 people are thought to be affected by fibro in some way.

You’re Just Lazy

Some people actually think that people use fibro as an excuse to be lazy. People with fibro are not lazy and if they had a choice don’t you think they would chose to be fit, healthy and well? Fibro can cause extreme tiredness and drain you of all your energy. When this happens you may be too tired to do even the easiest of tasks.

Fibromyalgia Is Rare

It is thought that 1 in 20 people in the UK may be affected by fibro in some way. These are the same statistics as people who suffer with sensory processing difficulties and we know that isn’t rare! So if you think fibro is rare it’s actually not! But it can take a long time to get a diagnosis.

There Is Nothing You Can Do

There is no cure for fibromyalgia but that doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything to make the symptoms easier to live with. A combination of medication, life-style changes, exercise and relaxation techniques can really help to relieve the symptoms.

There are lots of places online where you can get help and support for fibromyalgia including FMA. You can also use Fibromyaligia Support Group Map to find a list of support groups in your area.
